Charging Ford Electric Vehicles

What you should know about Ford electric vehicles

Ford currently sells only one plug-in hybrid electric car: the Ford Fusion Energi, which was originally introduced in 2013. Additionally, Ford offered the fully electric Ford Focus EV from 2011 to 2018, and Ford also sold the plug-in hybrid, C-Max Energi from 2013 to 2017.

Ford Focus EV charging and range

The all-electric Ford Focus EV had a 24 kWh battery in model years 2011 to 2016, which was good for an EPA range rating of 76 miles per charge. In 2017, the Focus’ all-electric vehicle battery was increased to 33 kWh to deliver 107 miles of range. For level 1 and level 2 fast charging, the Focus EV uses the industry standard SAE J1772 connector in North America. For DC fast charging, the Focus EV uses the SAE Combined Charging System, or CCS, connector. All of Ford’s electric cars have their charge port located on the front left fender, just ahead of the driver’s door.

Level 3 DC fast charging: CCS

For faster charging, the 2017 & 2018 Ford Focus EV can charge up to 80% in 33 minutes on a level 3, 50 kW DC fast charger. Previous model years of the Ford Focus EV didn’t have a level 3, DC fast charge option.

Ford plug-in hybrid charging and range

Both the Ford Fusion Energi and the Ford C-Max Energi models are capable of charging up to 3.3 kW on a level 1 and level 2 EV charging station, and use the standard SAE J1772 connector in North America. All model years for the Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi have a 7.6 kWh battery, with the exception of the 2019 Fusion Energi, which was upgraded to a 9 kWh battery.

As for range, the C-Max Energi is capable of going 19 miles per charge on the battery. The Fusion Energi is slightly more efficient, and model years 2013 to 2018 are rated at 21 miles per charge on the same 7.6 kWh battery that the C-Max Energi has. In 2019, Ford increased the size of the Fusion Energi’s battery to 9 kWh and, in doing so, increased the electric range to 25 miles per charge.

Both the Ford Fusion Energi and the Ford C-Max Energi models were not offered with level 3, DC fast-charge capabilities. Both support J1772 level 2 charging.

Ford Fusion driver JuiceBox reviews

  • Great Charger!!!
I have a 2019 Ford Fusion Energi. This product works great...What I like is since my car only maxes out charging at 17 amps, I set the controller to only use 20 amps. This allows me to guarantee I'll never overload my circuit with lights on...IMO this is a great chager and I would suggest it to anyone who is looking hands down!

  • Works great, nice online features, well designed and constructed
Bought a Ford C-Max Energi for my wife. I installed this charger for her. Installation was easy. The charging cord is high quality and very flexible. The connector that attaches to the car is also very well designed and built. The mobile app works well — I love being able to see how much current the car is drawing, from anywhere.
