Polestar is one of the new disruptors in the electric vehicle (EV) space. Owned by Volvo-parent company Geely, it aims to combine high-tech features and sports car driving dynamics with a modern Swedish look. Polestar was purchased by Volvo and Geely in 2017 to become its standalone electric sports car brand. Beginning with the Polestar 1 sports plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), Polestar has since gone fully electric as it plans to have a five-model lineup by 2026.
The Polestar 1 was the brand’s exclusive collector’s item PHEV. This sporty PHEV has an all electric driving range of 52 miles and a combined system output of 619 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The EPA has rated the Polestar 1 for fuel efficiency city/highway with a combined rating of 58 MPGe. A preview of Polestar’s sporty, all electric future, the Polestar 1 was discontinued in 2022 to make room for future fully electric models.
The Polestar 2 is Polestar’s fully electric vehicle that comes with a large battery pack and an electric motor that powers the front wheels—or two electric motors for buyers who want an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration. According to the EPA, the 2022-2023 single-motor 231 horsepower version) offers up to 270 miles of range, while the dual-motor 408 horsepower version delivers 249 miles of range. Refreshed 2024 models include a single-motor version for up to 320 miles while the dual-motor AWD model has a range of 276 miles.
Polestar’s 3rd model, the Polestar 3 is a midsize electric SUV and the brand’s first foray into the competitive electric SUV category. Using the same Volvo Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) as its cousin, the Volvo EX90, the Polestar 3 shares its 111 kWh battery , dual-motor AWD layout and 250 kW DC fast charging capability.
