Charging the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid

Everything drivers need to know about the Chrysler Pacific plug-in hybrid

The Chrysler Pacifica is the only plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or electric minivan available today. The ultra-efficient family-hauler seats up to seven passengers. The second row offers two captain’s chairs while the third row provides seating for three more people. The Chrysler Pacifica also comes with compelling bells and whistles—such as a state-of-the-art infotainment system, a built-in vacuum cleaner, and a FamCam in-cabin camera that projects video of the rear seats to the front-seat monitor.

A sizable 16 kWh battery pack provides an estimated 32 miles of all-electric range. The plug-in minivan has plenty of power for urban errands, suburban carpool runs, and highway road trips. Its 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine and two electric motors send 260 horsepower to the front wheels. Reviewers praise the Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid for providing a plush ride.

Perhaps most importantly for a minivan, the Pacifica offers more interior storage space than its rivals. There are 32.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the last row and the third-row bench seats fold down to open up 87.5 cubic feet of space, nearly 10 more cubic feet than competing models.

The Pacifica plug-in hybrid combines efficiency, power, and a large quiet cabin for seven passengers. For 2022, Chrysler is offering Silver Mist as a new color option along with improved air filtration and enhanced entertainment streaming via Amazon Fire TV.

Federal EV tax credits

Starting in 2022, electric vehicles (EVs) and PHEVs became eligible for federal tax credits up to $7,500 for new clean vehicles and up to $4,000 for used vehicles that met certain battery production and materials requirements. As of 2024, the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV qualifies for federal tax credits of $7,500. Even better, customers can obtain the tax credit as a rebate at point-of-sale, reducing their purchase by the full credit amount.

Charging the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid can go about 32 miles in all-electric EV mode. During those miles, the Pacifica’s efficiency is rated at 82 mpg equivalent. Between the 16 kWh battery pack and a 16.5 gallon gas tank, the plug-in minivan has a total range of 520 miles.

After those first 32 electric miles, the Pacifica operates like a conventional hybrid, granting 30 mpg of gasoline. That’s excellent for a minivan.

Many plug-in hybrids, which have relatively small battery packs, use a 3.3 kW charger. However, Chrysler provides a faster 6.6 kW onboard charger with the Pacifica so drivers can fully recharge the Pacifica in about two hours when using a 240 volt supply of electricity.

The JuiceBox 32 home charging station is an excellent choice for Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid owners. As a 32 amp charging station, it provides enough power for the minivan’s full 6.6 kW capability.

The Pacifica doesn’t offer quick-charging capability since it is necessary for an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid with a 16 kWh battery pack, considering that a Level 2 charging station can fill up the Pacifica’s battery in two hours.

In a pinch, Pacifica Hybrid drivers can use a standard 120-volt household outlet to recharge, while a full recharge with 120 volt, Level 1 charging takes about 14 hours. It’s more convenient to use a 240 volt charging station to add about 15 miles of driving range in an hour, getting the job done in about two hours.
